Line-ups are not beneficial if the perpetrator is not in the line-up. If the wrong person is chosen by the witness. Then the wrong person is being investigated on while the actual

perpetrator is still out free.

Studies have shown that by instructing the witness that a perpetrator is or is not in the line up can alter the investigation.

oWhen there is certain characteristic in a perpetrator, the witness may look for those characteristic in the line up even though they don’t know what the person looks like.

The longer the time of the event to the time the witness talks to the police can decrease the ability of the witness to present an accurate identification.
